Coffee Talk @ Thavorn Palm Beach Resort: Phuket, Thailand

Coffee Talk is one of the restaurants at Thavorn Palm Beach Resort.  It is a quaint coffee shop with some really cool decor.  It truly made us feel like we were back in New York.  I couldn’t resist the Matcha latte!  It was creamy, flavorful and a perfect pick me up, packed with caffeine.  We also tried the Thai Tea, iced with tea ice cubes and sweetened with condensed milk.  This was a huge treat and something I still dream about. The coffee selection here is extensive and they have what they call “Siphon coffee”.  This was a really cool experience.  The heat the water by flame and it rises up into the top of the siphon.  Once brewed, the coffee filters back down into the bottom of the glass, ready to be served.  The coffee winds up being very smooth and flavorful, it does not burn or have a harsh aftertaste.  We gave it an accent by adding some dōTERRA cinnamon bark oil!! Stacked Restaurant: Koh Samui, Thailand 

Stacked Restaurant on Koh Samui was recently opened and specializes in burgers. When you walk in, you could mistake yourself being in New York or San Diego by the decor and atmosphere of the place. With a huge surfboard table in the middle an retro bar scene, this is a cool place for drinks and great food. We both enjoyed specialty cocktails created by a mixologist from NYC. I had a margarita and Steven tried the island fashion, which was their take on an old fashion. To start we had the grilled Caesar salad. The dressing was clearly homemade and it was so on point. It was creamy and had a hint of anchovy flavor, which is exactly how it should taste. The grilled romaine lettuce was a great touch and it was topped with fresh croutons and shredded Parmesan cheese. The portion size was perfect for two to share as an appetizer. We also tried the Laab Tod, thai style pork meatballs. It came with three smaller size meatballs, so we suggest having your own …

Navigating for Tasty Eats on Koh Tao, Thailand

Preface: major apologies for no photos on this one!!!! We spent close to two weeks in Koh Tao. During this time we visited many different restaurants, mostly throughout meahead. We really enjoyed all of the places where we ate and would recommend all of them, as well as maybe a few that we did not get a chance to try. One of the first places we ate was actually on the pier and it was at a food cart that is run by an older woman. There are couple of food carts that can be found on the pier, but this one is one not to be missed. The special thing about this food cart is the incredible and tasty fried chicken that is made fresh right in front of your eyes. When you walk up to the cart, you can choose exactly which pieces you wish to take home with you after they have just been taken out of the hot oil right next to the cart. Third Time to the Bangkok Hub

After another eventful night train, this time first class, from Chiang Mai to Bangkok, we had 12 hours until we were on our last night train down to the islands. We arrived on a Sunday and decided to visit the weekend market, also called Jatachak market. We really didn’t realize, until we got there, how massive this market really is. We wondered around for a couple of hours and decided that we would never make it through the entirety of it and that it was so unbearably hot. We had planned to visit the palace and temples during the day, but we really couldn’t handle the heat. So, we got to looking into where to get massages or a place to kick back and relax for the day. We were also desperate for a shower, even though the first class car on the train had showers. We found a deal at the SO by Sofitel for pool access, which was 700 baht per person. Off the Beaten Path: An Unforgettable Birthday in Siem Reap, Cambodia

The day started out with a Happy Birthday FaceTime call from Jess’s family back home.  I told them about the day that Steven had planned for me and we were so excited.  About 20 minutes later, there was a knock on the door; our breakfast was here! We enjoyed breakfast in bed (included with our room) at The Sarai Resort and Spa; it was more like a feast.  Jess had the traditional Cambodian soup with rice noodles bok choi and bean sprouts as well as home made yoghurt with muesli and fresh papaya, jackfruit, passionfruit, and pineapple.  Steven had plain congee, which is similar to porridge, but made with rice that is cooked in water for many hours or overnight.  This was accompanied by smoked fish and a salted duck egg.  We shared some buttermilk pancakes, but they were nothing like Jeffrey’s pancakes that Jess was craving.  They accidentally also brought us vegetable fried rice, which we hadn’t ordered, but we definitely enjoyed anyway.  Breakfast was also served with a piece of toast, a croissant …

nOmPANG! for Lunch in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

After much research about where to go for lunch, Steven, Gillian, Gavin and I decided to try a place called nOmPANG!  We showed Sony, our tuk tuk driver, where to go on a map and we were on our way. We had chosen this place because it had some good reviews online and had been written up by a few other travelers.  We just knew that they made great sandwiches and you could chose from a bunch of options inside.  When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised by the decor and cleanliness of the restaurant. You can chose to take out or stay to eat at the small tables in the front.  The place seats about 18 people.  We went up to the counter to order and we chose the special with deli meats, pate, pork, and fried egg.  The sandwich is also stuffed with fresh herbs and veggies and seasoned with some house sauces.   We also ordered the sandwich with beef, which did not have a fried egg, but it did have the …

From Hanoi: The Capital of Vietnam to Hoi An: Tailor Shops by Day, City of Lanterns by Night

Our last day in Hanoi was really just the morning, which we decided to spend enjoying what the hotel restaurant had to offer as we had breakfast included with our room.  We stayed at La Siesta Hotel Trendy, the new sister hotel to La Siesta Hanoi Resort and Spa.  The restaurant in the hotel is the Red Bean Restaurant and has been rated as one of the top five restaurants in Hanoi. The included breakfast spread was a mix between a western style breakfast and a Vietnamese style breakfast, though other items could be ordered off the menu. Fresh fruit, home made yogurt, and an order of beef Pho made for for a great start to the day. We finished breakfast with a vietnamese egg coffee and a vietnamese coffee, checked out and ordered an uber. They also offer cooking classes, but we did not have time to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. New City, New Friends, New Memories in Hanoi, Vietnam

About a week before our journey to Southeast Asia began, Jess overheard another nanny talking about how she was moving to Hanoi in a few days while waiting for school pickup. Jess couldn’t help but introduce herself to ask for some tips about the city. They ended up exchanging emails and after a few quick messages back and forth, planned to meet in Hanoi. As a pleasant surprise, Morgan and her husband Nick offered to show us around for the day, as it had been almost eight years since they first met while studying abroad in Vietnam and wanted to do some touristy things as well. We began our day meeting our new friends at Cafe Phố Cũ, a well hidden gem of a coffee shop located behind two souveneer shops. Had we not met Morgan and Nick out front, we never would have found the place! Hong Kong Airport or Mall? 

On our way in to Hong Kong we were so exhausted from traveling we did not realize the vastness and craziness of the airport. Little did we know that arriving super early for our flight to Hanoi would be one of the best decisions. When we arrived back at the airport, basically retracing our steps from the airport to our hotel (red line to yellow line to airport express), we were floored. The ceilings were so high you could probably fly a plane through the airport itself. Everything was very clean, keeping in line with most of the city, and there were masses of people everywhere. We had eaten a light breakfast of a butter bun and raisin bun and weren’t particularly looking forward to eating airport or airline food again.  We checked in, got seats together again, said goodbye to our bags and found some Chinese dragons that we desperately wanted to parade around in, but the signs said NO!    We went through security and customs (shout out to our friends from Mexico!) …

Exploring Hong Kong

We had one full day in Hong Kong and since we were still attempting to adjust to the time difference, we decided we would just explore rather than run around doing too many touristy things.  As described by one of our family friends, Angie, Hong Kong is basically New York City and China Town on a much larger scale.  There are malls after malls after tailor shops after malls after electronic stores after street food after malls after electronic stores throughout the whole city.  The worst part about it is that everything is so much more expensive here, so Jess couldn’t even go shopping…not that we actually have room in our backpacks to acquire anything 10 hours into our trip. Thanks to suggestions from Amy and Co., a member of the Singer family, we decided to walk around and head towards the Star Ferry in the morning-ish (we slept in a bit).  On our way there we decided to walk through the park near the TST MTR station.  To our surprise there was a small …
