Thavorn Palm Beach Resort: Phuket, Thailand

For the last two nights we spent on Phuket, we had the pleasure of relaxing and exploring Karon Beach and the Thavorn Palm Beach Resort. As their slogan says, “nature”, we were surely transported from the Karon beach town to a jungle serenity.  Our stay at The Thavorn Palm Beach Resort Phuket on Karon Beach was just as the founding family of the Thavorn hotel group intended: peaceful. Located on a massive beachfront property, the tranquil grounds of Thavorn Palm Beach Resort house a beautiful orchid garden, two resident tortoises, rabbits and a host of birds and chickens. When we walked up the stairs at the front entrance into the lobby we were immediately brought to the VIP lounge for check in. The lounge is part of the, soon to be launched, reward program which gives members access to coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks throughout their stay. Coffee Talk @ Thavorn Palm Beach Resort: Phuket, Thailand

Coffee Talk is one of the restaurants at Thavorn Palm Beach Resort.  It is a quaint coffee shop with some really cool decor.  It truly made us feel like we were back in New York.  I couldn’t resist the Matcha latte!  It was creamy, flavorful and a perfect pick me up, packed with caffeine.  We also tried the Thai Tea, iced with tea ice cubes and sweetened with condensed milk.  This was a huge treat and something I still dream about. The coffee selection here is extensive and they have what they call “Siphon coffee”.  This was a really cool experience.  The heat the water by flame and it rises up into the top of the siphon.  Once brewed, the coffee filters back down into the bottom of the glass, ready to be served.  The coffee winds up being very smooth and flavorful, it does not burn or have a harsh aftertaste.  We gave it an accent by adding some dōTERRA cinnamon bark oil!! nOmPANG! for Lunch in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

After much research about where to go for lunch, Steven, Gillian, Gavin and I decided to try a place called nOmPANG!  We showed Sony, our tuk tuk driver, where to go on a map and we were on our way. We had chosen this place because it had some good reviews online and had been written up by a few other travelers.  We just knew that they made great sandwiches and you could chose from a bunch of options inside.  When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised by the decor and cleanliness of the restaurant. You can chose to take out or stay to eat at the small tables in the front.  The place seats about 18 people.  We went up to the counter to order and we chose the special with deli meats, pate, pork, and fried egg.  The sandwich is also stuffed with fresh herbs and veggies and seasoned with some house sauces.   We also ordered the sandwich with beef, which did not have a fried egg, but it did have the …

From Hanoi: The Capital of Vietnam to Hoi An: Tailor Shops by Day, City of Lanterns by Night

Our last day in Hanoi was really just the morning, which we decided to spend enjoying what the hotel restaurant had to offer as we had breakfast included with our room.  We stayed at La Siesta Hotel Trendy, the new sister hotel to La Siesta Hanoi Resort and Spa.  The restaurant in the hotel is the Red Bean Restaurant and has been rated as one of the top five restaurants in Hanoi. The included breakfast spread was a mix between a western style breakfast and a Vietnamese style breakfast, though other items could be ordered off the menu. Fresh fruit, home made yogurt, and an order of beef Pho made for for a great start to the day. We finished breakfast with a vietnamese egg coffee and a vietnamese coffee, checked out and ordered an uber. They also offer cooking classes, but we did not have time to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. Exploring Hong Kong

We had one full day in Hong Kong and since we were still attempting to adjust to the time difference, we decided we would just explore rather than run around doing too many touristy things.  As described by one of our family friends, Angie, Hong Kong is basically New York City and China Town on a much larger scale.  There are malls after malls after tailor shops after malls after electronic stores after street food after malls after electronic stores throughout the whole city.  The worst part about it is that everything is so much more expensive here, so Jess couldn’t even go shopping…not that we actually have room in our backpacks to acquire anything 10 hours into our trip. Thanks to suggestions from Amy and Co., a member of the Singer family, we decided to walk around and head towards the Star Ferry in the morning-ish (we slept in a bit).  On our way there we decided to walk through the park near the TST MTR station.  To our surprise there was a small …

Tim Ho Wan: Dim Sum

The moment we heard about an inexpensive, Michelin Star rated Dim Sum restaurant, we knew we had to try it. Tim Ho Wan, which actually lost its Michelin Star this year, definitely did not dissapoint! We had originally planned to go to Tim Ho Wan for dinner, as a friend advised they would be packed during the lunch hours. Tucked away in the lower level of the IFC mall in the MTR Central Station, Tim Ho Wan was not easy to find. By the time we found it, after walking in circles for an hour and a half, the lunch rush was nearing its end and we only had to wait in line for ten minutes. Even though there was a short wait, the restaurant was still very crowded.  As people got up, seats were immediately filled and many of the tables were communal. The White House Tavern: Aspen, CO

The White House Tavern was our last meal in Aspen, and boy did we go out with a bang! We sat at the bar with Tyler and a full view of the open kitchen. Although this was only half of the kitchen, as the other half is in the back, we were still able to see a lot of the exciting action. Tyler started us off sharing a local beer on draught, while we decided what to have. Once he told us the special was a version of a reuben, we were sold. We just had to decide if we wanted to have the super popular chicken sandwich or a burger. I do not eat burgers very often because I like to have my burger rare or medium rare and sometimes it is hard to find a place that you can order this way. When I told Tyler this, he said “Go with the burger!”, so we did. We sipped our beer, which was really good, and toasted to a fantastic week in Aspen. We …

Sunday Funday at Boston’s on the Beach: Delray Beach, FL

It is 78 degrees, blue skies and there is a light breeze on the patio of Boston’s on the Beach at Delray Beach. Whether you are ready to watch the game or enjoy the weather and the view, this is the place for some good food and laid back atmosphere. If you like Bloody Mary’s, The Wicked Mary was made for you! The Wicked starts with San marzano tomatoes, celery juice, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, and fresh horse radish. Although it is usually served with vodka, I substituted for tequila. The rim is covered in Celtic sea salt and old bay, which integrates well with the drink as well as the fixings on top. Garnished with a colossal shrimp, pepper jack cheese, salami, piri-piri pepper stuffed olives and celery, this cocktail dominates. For appetizers, we ordered the peel and eat shrimp and the NFL wings special. There were about 20+ shrimp served on ice with cocktail sauce. They were tasty and on the smaller side, but a great appetizer portion for at least four people to share. …

Buz and Ned’s Real Barbecue: Richmond, VA

Six hours down and thirteen to go! At this point during our drive from New York to Florida, it was time to make a stop for dinner. After referencing one of my facorite apps, Food Network on the Road, the decision was to try Buz and Ned’s Real Barbecue in Richmond, VA. Since they won their throw-down with Bobby Flay, we knew that we couldn’t go wrong. When we walked in, the rich scent of hickory overcame us. The joint had high top tables, some outdoor seating and booths, each with their own roll of paper towels. We ordered at the counter: full rack of baby back ribs, baked beans, fried okra, and sweet tea. We waited for our name to be called over the speaker at one of the high tops. The walls were covered with awards, photos and articles about Buz and Ned’s. By the front door they sell bottles of their home made BBQ sauce and chicken sauce. When the food was ready, they called our name and we picked it up …
